EAGLE Baseball Philosophy
It is the belief of our athletic department that athletics play an important role in helping mold the character of student athletes. Life lessons such as working together as a team, dealing with success and failure, and understanding the importance of roles within a large organization can be learned through active participation in sports. Student-athletes are also given the opportunity to represent their school, develop growth in the classroom and in the community, as well as learn the importance of good citizenship skills. We hope this growth and the skills developed will eventually lead to their continued education at an institution of higher learning. It is the intent of this baseball program to provide students with the opportunities to learn these lessons as well as others as they participate in the game of baseball, and our hope that in a few rare cases we may be the reason a student achieves her goals of a college education.
Although it is the goal of this program to allow any student the opportunity to mature and grow personally through baseball, it may be necessary to limit the number of individuals that we serve. Therefore, we welcome all incoming freshman who desire to play and would like to give them every opportunity to do so, however, as athletes mature in age and grade level, the coaching staff may need to make some difficult decisions about who will best represent SLW Centennial and our baseball program. Ideally we would like to keep 12-15 student-athletes on our Junior Varsity (consisting mainly of freshman and sophomores who are not ready to play varsity, but demonstrate the ability to one day play at that level) and up to 15-18 on the Varsity. This could change depending on how younger athletes project against upperclassmen, but we feel this will create an environment where practices can be held on one field and our coaching time and abilities will be maximized.
